The housing stock

A vineyard colony from 1857, and the hills behind it

Anaheim was founded in 1857 by fifty German settlers who bought land along the Santa Ana River to grow grapes. The original colony is now the Anaheim Colony Historic District, adopted by the city in 1997, with more than 1,000 qualifying structures in 1.8 square miles.

Beyond the Colony, Anaheim is mostly post-war tracts in the flatlands and newer, larger houses in Anaheim Hills to the east. The flatland houses are the classic kitchen-and-bath job; the hill houses are more often whole-house updates.

Permits and license

Who pulls the permit

  • The city reviews it. A remodel in Anaheim that moves plumbing, electrical or a wall needs a building permit from the city. We say at the estimate if your job needs one, and we pull it.
  • The Colony has its own standards. Exterior changes to houses in the Anaheim Colony Historic District follow the city’s standards for the district. Interior work follows the normal permit path.
  • The license is ours to hold. New Horizon Repair Services holds California CSLB License #1151716, Class B General Building. You can look it up on the CSLB site before you sign anything, and you should.
  • The scope is written before work starts. You get the estimate in writing, and work starts when you approve it.
